Siem Reap has officially unveiled its newly upgraded riverfront, an urban improvement project bringing much-needed infrastructure upgrades to the central city area. Backed by the Government of South Korea through the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), this redevelopment is now complete, marking a major milestone in Siem Reap’s modernization efforts.

At IPS Cambodia, we’re seeing firsthand how these improvements are changing the landscape, not just aesthetically, but also in terms of community life, business activity, and future growth potential.

A Joint Cambodia-Korea Project

The Siem Reap River Rehabilitation Project is part of South Korea’s continued partnership with Cambodia. Funded through Korea’s Official Development Assistance (ODA), this project focused on transforming five kilometers of riverbank, restoring natural flow, reducing flooding risks, and enhancing urban liveability.

Work officially began in 2023 under the supervision of KOICA, and by mid-2025, the project was completed, even ahead of initial timelines. The project is a continuation of South Korea’s long-term commitment to infrastructure support in Siem Reap, alongside other initiatives like Angkor Wat preservation and smart city development efforts.

Key Features of the Makeover

  • Over 5 km of scenic riverfront redesigned with clean walking paths, landscaped gardens, and shaded seating areas
  • Three brand-new pedestrian bridges, improving connectivity across Siem Reap’s city centre
  • Modern public lighting and widened footpaths for both daytime and evening enjoyment
  • Upgraded drainage systems, helping reduce flood risks during the rainy season
  • Public gathering areas to support local markets, events, and tourism activities

The river makeover also integrates with the broader 38 Roads Project, a large-scale government program that upgraded over 100 kilometers of roads, drainage networks, and public spaces across Siem Reap. Together, these projects are transforming the city’s infrastructure to better serve both residents and the growing number of visitors.

More Than Just Aesthetic Upgrades

The riverfront improvements go beyond aesthetics, delivering real, long-term benefits for Siem Reap’s urban environment. Locals have access to safer, cleaner public spaces, businesses see more foot traffic in key areas, and tourists experience a more accessible, enjoyable city.

For the community, it means more recreational options and healthier outdoor spaces. For businesses, it means more visibility and opportunities along key commercial corridors. For Siem Reap overall, it represents a step forward in sustainable urban development.
